Before you start debating I want to suggest some basic debating rules that I’ve learned during my experience. This is what I try, and it’s been working for me.

I try to avoid foolish arguments

This is a very important rule that I have learned. One verse that I keep in mind while debating is 2 Timothy 2:23-26 (KJV):

“But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.”

If someone asks me a question I try to find an answer always

Whether someone is trying to challenge me or sincerely find out about Christianity I always try to answer their questions, but still keeping the foolish arguments rule in mind.

A verse that reminds me of this often is 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV):

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;”

I try to only reason with Scripture (KJV).

The only way I would not follow this rule is if the person didn’t believe in scripture, therefore, I would find out/study what they believe, then show them how it is foolish or any contradictions in it.

I will post more debating rules that works for me and keeps the debate fair as I find them.
